Data Encryption
Data encryption can take many forms from a single file, virtual drive, and even an entire disk. The techniques can vary from Key-based (RSA, DES, PGP), to using Stenography, but the principle is the same make it hard as possible for someone to read the information.
Note: Be forewarned when using encryption that your information may be unrecoverable if you forget the key. Also note that exporting encrypted data to another country either physically or over a network may be illegal.
Two of my favorite encryption programs are of course GnuPG (Linux), and TrueCrypt (WIN) both work well and fulfill the principle make it hard as possible to read the information. TrueCrypt works as a virtual/entire disk encryption program. You can set it to automount via password or using a key file, there are many more features....
