Data Shredding

Protecting your information is key to avoiding identity/digital theft besides using strong passwords, and encryption, another tool is to make sure the information cannot be recovered using standard data recovery techniques- This is called data/file shredding.

Note: Be forewarned when using a data shredder that the information may be unrecoverable.

Two of my favorite data shredders are eraser ( WIN ) and wipe ( Linux ). Both use the Gutmann technique and work well in both environments. One nice feature about eraser is when you right click on the Recycling Bin in Windows it gives you choices on how to shred your files (Psuedorandmon, DoD, and Gutmann ) so depending on the sensitivity of the information a simple Psuedorandom may work in most cases. For the more paranoid a 35 pass Gutmann will be sure to satisfy.
