Crossing the digital border

As a English speaking Canadian located in Canada when I go to http://www.google.com I automatically get redirected to http://www.google.ca. The .ca is called a Top Level Domain or TLD in this case it refers to Canada. Google has many other TLDs Russia (.ru), China (.cn), United Kingdom (.co.uk), etc.

So I decided to head over to Russia to see whats there bit of a culture shock as I mentioned Im English speaking and the site is in Russian of course. But I know Google has a translator so I head back to Google.ca and click on Language Tools. Scroll down till I find "Translate a web page" put in http://google.ru and select Russian to English click Translate and there it is the Russian version of Google translated to English.

Note: If you plan on submitting information on a foreign site using a translator a good practice is to make a quick note that you are using a translator.

If you look at this from a travelers perspective .... there is a whole new world to explore without a passport. From a users perspective you can find more things on the web or at least different search results from the translated search string.
